In the 1940s Beatrix Farrand sketched a plan for the grounds of the Straight family property in Alexandria, Virginia which included a semi-circular garden. The house and garden are now part of the Fairfax County park system under the stewardship of the Fairfax County Park Authority. The Authority approached the Garden Club in 2010 with a request to restore the garden to its original vision. Ms. Farrand, one of the founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is perhaps best known for her work at Dumbarton Oaks. A master of proportion and scale, her flower garden designs also remain the subjects of much study and admiration. At Green Spring, the Garden Club has restored the stone retaining wall that is the backbone of the garden and looks forward to planting the perennial border this fall.
